October 16 sees the world premiere of Peter Jackson's (the renowned director of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) evocative film 'They Shall Not Grow Old’ at the 62nd BFI London Film Festival.
This vivid documentary, to mark the centenary of the First World War, uses 100-year old footage that has been painstakingly colourised & transformed with modern production techniques to present never-before-seen detail.
The movie uses the voices of veterans combined with original archival footage to bring to life the reality of war on the front line for a whole new generation.
At ec2i, we sometimes like to stretch our creative muscles by applying our extensive colour knowledge on other subjects outside the world of fashion & retail.
The colourised example here, which was originally shot in 1943 outside a Washington Court House in Ohio, shows the process of colourisation used in Jackson's new film. The art of converting black and white photography requires research, time and skills before our retouchers can devise a palette of colours and hues that compliment the period and setting in history. Thanks to our retoucher, Damian Smith, for this example.
